Gennady Zubkov

Gennady Zubkov was born in 1940 in Perm, Russia.  In 1968 Zubkov graduated from the Painting and Graphic Department of the Hertzen State Pedagogical University in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), where he continues to live and work.

At Hertzen Universtiy, Zubkov studied under Vladimir Sterligov (1904 – 1973), himself a student of Kazimir Malevich, and the founder of the Sterligov Group.  The group focused on the concepts and theories of Impressionism, Cubism, and importantly Suprematism, as through Sterligov there was a direct connection to Malevich and the Russian Avant-Garde.  Sterligov, as a great proponent of colour theory, developed the concept of "spherical geometry," which Zubkov was to take one step further with the development of his painting theory "form creates form."  Particularly evident in his still life and landscape paintings, Zubkov's intellectual approach to image making is balanced by an intense interest in the beauty of nature and spirituality.  Zubkov presents the world crystalized, and his prismatic forms are at once abbreviations of reality and yet somehow more saturated.

As an unofficial artist during the Soviet Era, Zubkov worked in the botanical gardens, an employment that allowed him to continue his studies of form and colour and strengthened his love of nature.  An intensely spiritual man, Zubkov seeks to capture the beauty of the world around him in his paintings, to make it tangible to the viewer, and in doing so hopes that we might begin to relate more kindly and carefully to the world.  Similarly, the botanical gardens taught him of the ephemerality of beauty, and it is this beauty that he aims to crystalize in his paintings.

Zubkov participated in the first exhibition of Unofficial Art at the Gaza Palace of Culture in 1974, and the second at the Nevsky Palace of Culture the following year.  After the death of Sterligov in 1973, Zubkov carried on his teaching and worked to maintain the group.  Since 1986, he has mentored young artists in the groups "Form + Color" and "April 17th".  Over his 45 year career as an artist, Gennady Zubkov has participated in more than 150 exhibitions in Russia, Europe and the USA, and his works can be found in many important public and private collections.
