Petr Tatarnikov

Petr Tatarnikov, a member of a well-known St. Petersburg artistic family, was born in 1953 in Leningrad. Today he is living and working in St. Petersburg.

Following the path of a classical art education, he attended the Secondary Art School of Leningrad and continued his studies at the Academy of Arts of St. Petersburg where he worked to master monumental art in the legendary workshop of Andrey Mylnikov. Finishing his education and not wanting to leave the artistic atmosphere of the academic workshops Tatarnikov thus began his long teaching career in the architectural department of the same academy.

Despite his classical artistic training, adhering to the techniques of oil painting, and following the established genres of landscapes, portraits and narrative compositions, Tatarknikov developed his own style early on, which distinguished itself by abstraction of the represented and reduction of the picturesque vocabulary. The monochrome, yet seemingly modern and exalted surfaces of his landscape paintings are created with minimal, rhythmically and harmoniously repetitive contours and volumes of basic geometry as well as a delicately graduated color palette. Rather than nature itself, the artist illustrates the mysterious, unpredictable and incomprehensible aspects of nature, symbolizing the origin and the eternity of life. Tatarnikov uses minimalism as a means of transformation and abstraction, thereby lending a monumental integrity to his works.
